Position Title Research Associate
Department National Center for Physical Acoustics
Job Location Oxford
Job Type Full-Time
Job Description

The National Center for Physical Acoustics at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, MS is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate with solid and proven experience in seismic data processing and inversion to lead the effort for an innovative project in Seismic Oceanography. Recent work has shown that marine seismic reflection profiling, a technique commonly used by geophysicists and geologists to image the Earth’s crust beneath the seafloor, can produce surprisingly detailed images of thermohaline fine-structure in the ocean; this project aims to perform the first seismic water-column study using a 3D seismic volume acquired in 1000m water depth within the Gulf of Mexico. The successful candidate will be involved in seismic data processing of large datasets and inversion, especially multichannel 3D seismic volumes using commercially available software (i.e. Seismic for Unix, Promax, Vista, or similar).

The ideal candidate will be highly motivated and overall independent and will be expected to autonomously carry out the research and publish the results in peer reviewed journals.

The position is for one year, but if results are promising and additional funding resources are available, the position may be extended.

Job Responsibilities

The candidate will be responsible for implementing a data processing workflow of marine 3d seismic data with the main goal of identifying reflections occurring in the water column and possibly correlating them with water column structures.

The candidate will be expected to autonomously conduct the research, report timely to supervisor(s), and to publish the results in peer reviewed journals.

Minimum Qualifications

This position requires either a PhD in Geophysics, Geology, Engineering, Computer Science, Ocean Science (or a closely related field), OR an MS in Geophysics, Geology, Engineering, Computer Science, Ocean Science (or a closely related field) with three (3) or more years’ experience as a seismic data processor in the oil industry (CGG, ION, PGS, TGS, SLB etc.).

The successful candidate will have a proven knowledge of seismic data processing of large datasets and inversion, especially multichannel 3D seismic volumes using commercially available software (i.e. Seismic for Unix, Promax, Vista, or similar). Proficiency in code computing and scientific programming (i.e. Phyton, Perl, C++, Matlab or similar) is required.

Good knowledge of oceanography and oceanographic processes and experience in analysis of satellite time series data of ocean parameters is desirable.
