Job Description

The University of Mississippi Libraries seeks a collaborative, forward-thinking librarian with proven leadership skills to serve as the Lead STEM Librarian. This position is responsible for the overall direction and management of the Science Library branch including personnel, services, resources, and facilities. As a department in the Public Services division, the Lead STEM Librarian provides leadership for the branch, which currently houses the University Libraries’ chemistry and pharmacy collections. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to reconsider the scope of the Science Library’s current holdings and will be tasked with supporting resources and providing services to all STEM disciplines.

The Science Library branch complements the main J.D. Williams Library located on the University of Mississippi’s central campus in Oxford. The Science Library is strategically positioned within the Thad Cochran Research Center and is in close proximity to the new STEM facilities currently under construction. The University Libraries is looking to expand the role and function of the Science Library branch and will be adding permanent STEM faculty librarian positions that will report to the Lead STEM Librarian in addition to the two current full-time staff members.

The Lead STEM Librarian will serve as a liaison to one or more STEM disciplines with responsibilities for developing outreach programs, library instruction, consultations, and research support. This position will also collaborate with other librarians in support of data management initiatives across campus. In 2017, the University of Mississippi initiated Flagship Constellations, which are designed to bring together a wide range of faculty from across campus to address some of the most difficult and complex problems facing our nation and world. Job Responsibilities

Duties & Responsibilities:
• Leads all aspects of the Science Library branch, including staffing, collections and facilities

• Currently supervises a dedicated team of two professional staff, and several student assistants, with future plans to add additional STEM faculty librarians

• Provides vision for the future direction of the Science Library branch, including services provided, electronic and physical STEM collections, staffing responsibilities, and facilities

• Demonstrates scientific expertise in at least one STEM academic field

• Communicates to non-scientist stakeholders the importance of providing access to scientific literature

• Serves as the liaison to select STEM departments, communicates frequently with academic departments and assumes primary responsibility for the development, promotion, and delivery of programs and services for these disciplines, including providing discipline-specific library instruction, research consultations, outreach, grant-writing activities, and other services.

• Collaborates with the University’s Office of Research & Sponsored Programs in designing and developing the Libraries’ services for supporting data management, scholarship and research data

• Engages with institutional partners to promote STEM disciplines across the main campus and serves as the liaison to the UMMC medical center library in Jackson

• Participates in library-wide instructional initiatives, including STEM-specific instruction as well as general education information literacy instruction when needed

• Understands evolving models of scholarly communication, open access, institutional repositories, and other trends as it relates to scientific research

• Works effectively and collegially with colleagues, faculty, administrators, and stakeholders at all levels

• Demonstrates commitment to scholarship, service, and professional development to meet the requirements expected of academic library faculty for tenure and promotion.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
MLS or MLIS degree from an ALA-accredited institution of higher education or international equivalent

STEM academic background and/or experience working with the scientific research community

• Demonstrated supervisory or managerial experience

• Demonstrated knowledge of STEM subscription resources, open access platforms, and other trends supporting research and teaching in the sciences

• Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate or partner with a diverse range of constituents
