|Position Title||Research Scientist or Senior Research Scientist|
|Department||National Center for Physical Acoustics|
The University of Mississippi’s National Center for Physical Acoustics (NCPA) invites applications for a Research Scientist that will assume a leadership role as a Principal Investigator within the Aeroacoustics Research Group. The Aeroacoustics Research Group has an established track record in the study of supersonic jet noise and transonic cavity flows. The candidate will make use of the group’s world class research facilities (http://www.olemiss.edu/depts/aeroacoustics/UM_Aeroacoustics/Facilities.html) to conduct novel research that will expand the group’s research activities into the areas of fluid/structure and thermo-fluid/structure interactions, unsteady combustion dynamics, and aero-optics.
The NCPA facilities offer a unique opportunity to leverage multiple measurement techniques simultaneously to explore and refine the understanding of turbulence interactions in complex flows. The NCPA is an externally funded research unit of the University; therefore, the candidate will be expected to develop and sustain outside funding for research efforts commensurate with their expertise.
The successful candidate should be eligible to apply for an appointment as a Research Faculty (non-tenure track) in an appropriate department in order to mentor graduate students. While not a tenure-track position, the research positions in the NCPA do follow a promotion path that is closely aligned with the University’s academic ranks (Research Scientist I, Research Scientist II, Senior Scientist I, Senior Scientist II, Principal Scientist). The University has an Aeroacoustics Graduate Program that is open to graduate students in physics, mathematics, chemistry, and engineering. Typically, students in the program follow the curriculum of their home department with the addition of fluids/turbulence/aeroacoustics electives while working as research assistants in the Aeroacoustics Research Group. The candidate will be expected to mentor students in the University’s Graduate Program in Aeroacoustics and be capable of teaching relevant graduate courses as needed.
The candidate shall assume a leadership role as a Principal Investigator within the Aeroacoustics Research Group and team with the other researchers to grow and broaden the aeroacoustics research activities at The University of Mississippi. The candidate shall utilize modern testing techniques to measure and characterize complex flow fields and aeroacoustics related phenomena. The candidate shall support the continued development of Aeroacoustic infrastructure at the NCPA and teach and mentor students in the University’s Graduate School Program in Aeroacoustics. The candidate shall develop and sustain outside funding for research efforts commensurate with their expertise and mentor graduate students on related research projects.
The position requires an earned PhD in Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Science, Applied Physics, or a closely related field. At least three years (Research Scientist) or five years (Senior Research Scientist) of experimental research experience in the field of Acoustics, Aeroacoustics, Turbulence, Fluid/Structure Interaction or an allied field is required. The successful candidate will demonstrate proficiency in the practice of modern fluid-mechanics measurements (PIV, LDV, LDA, DIC, PLIF, Shack-Hartmann, hot wire arrays, microphone arrays, Kulites, etc.) and familiarity with correlation-based analytical methods (wavenumber-frequency decomposition, POD, wave-packet analysis, array processing, etc.). The selected candidate must be eligible for U.S. Security Clearance.
